Washington – “We, G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, are closely monitoring the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its impact on markets and economic conditions.

Given the potential impacts of COVID-19 on global growth, we reaffirm our commitment to use all appropriate policy tools to achieve strong, sustainable growth and safeguard against downside risks.  Alongside strengthening efforts to expand health services, G7 finance ministers are ready to take actions, including fiscal measures where appropriate, to aid in the response to the virus and support the economy during this phase.  G7 central banks will continue to fulfill their mandates, thus supporting price stability and economic growth while maintaining the resilience of the financial system.

We welcome that the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other international financial institutions stand ready to help member countries address the human tragedy and economic challenge posed by COVID-19 through the use of their available instruments to the fullest extent possible.

"The coronavirus poses evolving risks to economic activity," says the Fed, announcing an emergency 50-basis point cut in the Fed Funds rate to a range of 1%-1.25%."The Committee is closely monitoring developments and their implications for the economic outlook and will use its tools and act as appropriate to support the economy."

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority cut its benchmark interest rate in line with the U.S. Federal Reserve. The HKMA on Wednesday lowered its base rate to 1.50% from 2.00% in step with the Fed ’s move according to a “pre-set formula”. ---Bloomberg

Economists from six out of 10 primary dealers of Canadian government securities told The Wall Street Journal they anticipate the Bank of Canada will cut its benchmark overnight interest rate by a quarter percentage point, to 1.50%, at a scheduled announcement Wednesday. ---Wall Street Journal

Bank of Japan Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda issued a statement Monday, after an early plunge in share prices, saying the central bank “will closely monitor future developments, and will strive to provide ample liquidity and ensure stability in financial markets through appropriate market operations and asset purchases. " On Friday, the BOJ issued plans for purchases of assets for the coming weeks: the central bank already buys tens of billions of dollars' worth of government bonds and other assets each year as part of its aggressive efforts to maintain cheap credit to help prevent deflation .---Market Watch

As the fears of the coronavirus continue to rise, the Bank of England ’s Mark Carney said his central bank would take ‘all necessary steps to support the UK economy and financial system.’  ---yahoo.com

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, said the central bank is ready to act to support the economy amid the spreading. The European Central Bank will respond to the Federal Reserve's “decisive” interest rate cut with easing of its own, according to Commerzbank. ---Bloomberg
