Odd Still Favor Short Term Market Bounce.仍然看好短期市场反弹

Yesterday, the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 were able to hold last week's lows (31228, 11108 and 3858 respectively). Coupled with the fear/greed and put/call ratios, which show that investor sentiment is too pessimistic, U.S. stocks have begun to rebound. Stocks across Asia and Europe rose after the People's Bank of China cut interest rates overnight to stimulate its economy. The strength of foreign stock markets should be a positive help for U.S. stocks. In addition, famous technical analyst Tom De-Mark's TD Combo indicator issued a buy signal (this indicator had issued 6 buy-signals since 2000, 5 of which were accurate, this is the 7th signal).  The odd for US stocks to continue to rebound  is good. The Nasdaq rebound target is 12000-12250.

US April industrial production+1.1%from March better than  +0.5% estimate, retail sales were +0.9% below +1% forecast but March data was revised up sharply to +1.4% from +0.5%. Other positives include Shanghai's plan to ease Covid lockdown, Bank of America statistics show that investors have the largest amount of cash in 20 years, the amount of technology short sell is the largest since August 2006, and its bull-bear indicator is 2, which is a buy signal for a rebound against the trend.  Bank of America said it would be just a rebound in a bear market. Analysts at Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and BTIG have downside targets for the S&P 500 at 3400, 3600 and 3500, respectively. The Nasdaq has risen the 3 rd day in 4 and is now at 11870. The two resistances above will be 12000 and 12330. As it rises towards these levels the chances of  falling back down are high. U.S. stocks have retreated from today's highs and are rising again. U.S. stocks should still have room to rise, but consider closing bullish positions when the market indexes approach resistances. Fed Chair Jay Powell will speak at 11AM Pacific Time and what he said may dictate market direction.

Short Squeeze Rallies For Stock Indexes And Cryptos Start.股票指数和加密货币的空头挤压反弹开始

The Nasdaq Composite Index found support at 11000 as I suggested since May 1. It bounced up from that level yesterday and is moving up strongly today. After 6 weeks of downside actions, major US market indexes are oversold. Put/Call ratio at 1.23 yesterday is a bullish indicator for the market to turn back up immediately. A 2 to 3 day short squeeze rally is likely with upside target at Nasdaq 12000-12500.

Bitcoin rallied from a low of 25401 back up to 30472 yesterday, a more than $5000 move turn around in a single day! It has formed a bullish long tail reversal pattern. Its rally will likely continues with resistance at $35000.

I think it is safe to buy stock index bullish ETFs TQQQ, TNA, UDOW and SPXL and crypto ETFs such as GBTC and ETHE for the bounces.  However, both the stock market and Bitcoin rallies are rallies in downtrends, more downside washout are to happen after the rallies. Watch for Nasdaq 12000-12500 and Bitcoin $35000 for taking profits.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rate by 50 basis points (the biggest rate increase in 20 years) and also initiated quantitative tightening. Investors were confused initially by moving the market up and down after the news. When Federal Reserve chairman Jay Powell was asked whether the Fed had considered a 75 basis point interest rate hike and the answer was no, investors went crazy and drove the Dow Jones Industrial Average up over 900 points as they interpreted the answer as dovish.  After investors had time to think things over overnight, they came in today and sold the market off hard from open to close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down over 1063 points (-3.12%) totally erased yesterday gain plus more. The Nasdaq came down the most , down 647 points (-4.99%), while the S&P lost 153 points(-3.56%). After all, investors realized the accelerate rate hike cycle has only just the beginning and this will slow economic growth and will adversely impacting corporate profits. The treasury bonds were also sold off driving treasury yields to their recent highs, showing the worry over more rate hike to come.  Adding to worry over higher interest rate, inflation, Russia/Ukraine war, Chinese city lockdowns on Convid, supply chain restrains and high tech stock valuations are also in investors minds. 

 Momentum points to more market drop likely. How far down can the market go? The Nasdaq Composite's weekly chart I presented a few days ago is still applicable. Based on Measured Move calculation, the Nasdaq may go down to 11000 level which represent about 32% drop from all time high. David Larew's Think Tank Chart illustrated the S&P 500 's fair value levels based on EPs are also great references.

Nasdaq Reenters Bear Market, Target 11000 纳斯达克重新进入熊市, 下跌目标11000

The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted the worst April since 1970 down 8.8% and 4.9%, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite’s 13.2% drop was the most since April of 2000. For year today the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite index are down 9.19%, 13.3% and 21.15% respectively while from all time high they are down10.8%, 14.3% and 23.9% respectively .

The Federal Reserve will decide its monetary policy on Wednesday. investors expect the central bank  to raise interest rates by 50 basis points, representing the first hike of more than 25 basis points since 2000. Investors also expect the Fed to formally announce plans to start rolling assets off the central bank's balance sheet, beginning the process of quantitative tightening and in its statement after the meeting, more hawkishness is likely.

In China, as Shanghai is still in lock down mode, CNN reported Beijing has banned all restaurant dining, shut down Universal Studios and ordered residents to provide proof of a negative Covid test to enter public venues in a major escalation of restrictions as a five-day holiday gets underway.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine is getting bloodier and no end is in sight. The war is now transitioning into a long, bitter struggle, which will likely cost thousands more lives and tens of billions of dollars. The war has dragged US and NATO into never before seen power confrontation with Russia. 

The situations in China and Ukraine have brought about worldwide supply chain problem and much higher inflation. The Q1 US Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) came in at 7% and US Q1 GDP dropped sharply from last year Q4's +6.9% to -1.1%. Global economic recession may come much earlier than most people think.  

Earnings among big tech stocks came in mixed as MSFT, FB, TSLA , AAPL  and INTC reported better earnings while AMZN, GOOG reported worse. However, the catch is most of them guided future earnings lower citing supply chain headwinds. The problem most people ignore is valuations on these stocks are still too high and they need to come down further. This is evident by last Friday's sharp sell off after the above corporate earnings. Now that most influential earnings are out, there's nothing to help  cushion the market's downturn.

Technically, both the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 are now closed  below their March and February closing lows, and the Dow Jones Industrial is in the verge of breaking its February low. the market momentum is down, more market downturn is likely. The Nasdaq Composite is down 23.9% from its all time high, it has officially re-entered bear market territory. In the past, average bear market dropped 36% and lasted 9 months, with the present difficult situations in the market, it is only likely that the market will do the same this time. Since tech stocks are leading the market down, I am using the Nasdaq Composite Index to estimate its possible downside target. By using the Measured Move (or Continuation Down Pattern) method I am projecting the next downside target for the Nasdaq is around 11000 and it would represent about 32% dropped from all time high. Stock market's strategy is sell on rallies.

与此同时，乌克兰的战争愈演愈烈而看不到尽头。战争现在正在转变为一场漫长而艰苦的斗争，这可能会造成成千上万人的生命和数以百亿美元计的损失。这场战争将美国和北约拖入了对俄国前所未有的权力对抗。

中国和乌克兰的局势带来了全球供应链问题和更高的通货膨胀。美国第一季度个人消费支出 (PCE) 为 7%是非常高的通胀率。美国第一季度 GDP 从去年第四季度的 +6.9% 急剧下降至 -1.1%。全球经济衰退可能比大多数人想象的来的要早得多。
