Tech Stocks Topped Out, S&P 500 3000 May Not Hold

News that more and more countries are opening up economies and news on COVID-19 vaccines and drugs developments are driving the stock market higher this morning. Dow opened up over 500 points and is now trading up over 600. Small company index Russell 2000 is the strongest among major indexes as it is up over 3.6%. Today's strong sectors are financials, industrials and energy while  weaker by comparison are the health care and technology sectors.  Tech stocks including AAPL, AMZN, FB, GOOG, MSFT and NVDA have been trending since open. As I pointed out in the last few posts warning that tech stocks have been moving up in a vertical fashion and not likely tot be sustainable, today they became the drag for the market.  The hot biotech/healthcare sector is also being sold right from the open in the face of positive COVID-19 vaccine and drug development news. Now that the S&P 500 has satisfy investors desire of breaking the 3000 level but it may not be sustainable as investors may use this opportunity to sell. As a lot of good news on economy reopening and COVID-19 vaccine and treatment developments have factored in the stock market price, it may be time to be cautious since tech stock has topped out, worries on whether reopening will be successful and trade war chance increases between US and China are the concerns.

。late-stage biotech company Novavax Inc. NVAX, 13.11% said it has started human trials of its vaccine candidate. The first phase of the placebo-controlled study will enroll 130 healthy adults and the first round of data from that study is expected in July. Big drugmaker Merck & Co. MRK, 1.99% also said it is working on two potential vaccines and an experimental drug against the coronavirus, joining rivals in the frantic search for medicines. There are 10 vaccines in clinical evaluation and 114 in preclinical evaluation, according to a running tally by Fundstrat. ---Market Watch

。After months of relative quiet amid the coronavirus pandemic, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Hong Kong, defying the city's ban on gatherings to voice their opposition to a new "national security" law proposed by Beijing which would threaten the city's autonomy and the civil liberties of its residents. The protesters, most of whom could be seen donning masks, were hit with tear gas less than an hour after the start of the demonstrations which resulted in at least 120 arrests-including 40 of which were people accused of blocking Gloucester Road. A water cannon truck was also deployed according to SCMP. "Beijing unveiled details of the law on Friday, which would most likely grant the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) 's security services jurisdiction over matters in Hong Kong-which drew condemnation from Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the EU, Australia, Canada and the United States, according to the report. --- Zero Hedge

。A top White House aide renewed a warning on Sunday that the US might revoke Hong Kong's special trading privileges if China enacts a tough new security law covering the territory. The warning from national security advisor Robert O'Brien came amid soaring tensions between Washington and Beijing , and only hours after China's foreign minister Wang Yi warned that the two countries seemed poised "at the brink of a new Cold War." Referring to Beijing's 1984 agreement to grant Hong Kong, a former British colony, substantial autonomy through 2047, O ' Brien told CBS's "Face the Nation" that "it looks like they're violating that agreement." "I can't see how Hong Kong remains an Asian financial center if the Chinese Communist Party goes through and implements its national security law and takes over Hong Kong, "he said .--- International Business Times

。The Treasury market is holding in a tenuous calm as traders balance fears that US-China tensions will escalate with hopes that the tepid pace of American business reopenings pick up steam. The rift between Washington and Beijing has moved beyond issues related to the pandemic to include angst over China's national security actions against Hong Kong. This backrop has crimped investors' risk appetite and bolstered demand for Treasuries as a haven. Still, bond bears aren't giving up, emboldened by the easing of social-distancing measures across many US states and by the pipeline of Treasury supply that is growing larger. ---Bloomberg.com

---Market Watch

US/China Tension Rises On China's Tough Stand On Hong Kong

US stocks opened down, bounced, and is mixed now trading in a narrow range with downside bias. Major news this morning is China said it's preparing to impose national security legislation on Hong Kong. This news drove the Hong Kong stock market dived over 5%. China also decided to dropped its annual economic growth target for the first time on economic uncertainty due to Covid-19. This news caused WTI crude oil dropping 3%. The oil sector is  down and is down nearly 2% and is the weakest stock sector this morning.  The real estate sector is the only S&P 500 stock sector that is up. The technology sector supported by better than expected earning from Nvidia (NVDA)is down only slightly.  In the face of negative news on Hong Kong and increasing tension between US and China, the US stock market is holding up surprisingly well. I guess investors are believing there are no place better to invest than the US stock market. However, China's tough attitude towards Hong Kong will definitely bring tension between China and the United States and  alsoWestern countries, who know what is going to happen in Hong Kong during the weekend as demonstration against the government is  being organized, the  S&P 500 failing to top the 3000 resistance, signs of topping of the FAAMG stocks , and potential selling before the long weekend all should serve to pressure stocks.

。Hong Kong is bracing for a new wave of demonstrations this weekend after China said it's preparing to impose national security legislation on the financial hub, a move that shows Beijing's legal force and will likely reignite tensions between pro-democracy protesters and the government.  Sources told the Financial Times that China's parliament would draft the new legislation and submit it immediately into Hong Kong's constitution. China's National People's Congress released an agenda Thursday saying it wants to "improve" national security protections in Hong Kong by curbing acts of treason, secession, sedition, and subversion. The measure would also allow for counter-terrorism operations against foreign interference in the city.  The legislation, slated for passage in the National People's Congress in Beijing next week, drew angry crowds in Hong Kong on Friday, and President Trump warned Thursday that the US would react "very strongly" to the planned legislation. ---Zero Hedge

。World stocks took a hit and the Chinese yuan weakened on Friday as Beijing moved to impose a new security law on Hong Kong after last year’s pro-democracy unrest, further straining fast-deteriorating U.S.-China ties. These tensions plus news that China has dropped its annual economic growth target for the first time added to concern about the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, knocking oil prices down more than 4% LCOc1 and boosting safe-havens such as U.S. Treasuries. ---Reuters

It Is The Tech Stocks We Should Worry About 我们应该担心的是科技股

Major US stock indexes opened up slightly and selling immediately rushed in taking the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq down 0.46%, 0.77% and 0.75% respectively now. More than expected jobless claims and increasing tension between US and China are two of the reasons for the sell off. However, I believe technical condition is the main reason.  In the past 1 month the S&P 500 has been trying to break above its 3000 level 3 times and failed. This makes this level even harder to break and attracts selling. In addition, the 5 stocks (AAPL, AMZN, FB, GOOD, MSFT) that make up over 20% of the S&P 500 capitalization have now moving up too much too fast to an unsustainable levels. AAPL , MSFT  and Nasdaq 100 ETF QQQ have risen 7 out of the last 10 weeks and are very close to their all time highs. Their nearly vertical V shape reversal rallies defy gravity and reality and are not likely to be sustainable. They all have the potential of forming bearish Double Top patterns and downside correction looks inevitable.  Both AMZN and FB made new highs today and are reversing down. They may be fully priced. GOOG is the lagger of the 5 stocks and is having hard time to surpass its recent high. Then comes Nvidea's (NVDA) earning report after market close today, everybody expecting a good report but a stock is hard to go any where when everybody has bought in  and it makes all time high before the earning report.  These 6 stocks have been leading the market up and are now likely to take the market down.

。In the last week 2.44 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits for the first time (slightly worse than the 2.40 million expected). That brings the nine-week total to 38.64 million, which is massively worse than the prior worst nine-week period in the last 50-plus years. 。In a rare outburst that went so far as to accuse the "very top" of China's government of a "massive disinformation campaign", Trump slammed China again just days before the biggest Chinese political gathering of the year, with traders betting that it was now just a matter of time before China retaliated in deed instead of just in word.  "Markets may be pricing in far too much complacency as the U.S.-China ‘phase one’ trade deal could be at risk," said market strategist Stephen Innes. 。Pressure on Chinese companies is building in the U.S. after the Senate unanimously passed the "The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act." 。Exchange-traded funds that track the performance of Chinese companies stumbled Thursday as the House of Representatives considers a bill that could ban Chinese firms from listing on U.S. exchanges, after a similar bill passed the Senate unanimously Wednesday. The Invesco China Technology ETF CQQQ was down 2.7% in early trade Thursday, while shares of Global X MSCI China Consumer Discretionary ETF CHIQ shed 2.3% and KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF KWEB declined 1.8%. The bill would require that foreign companies let the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board oversee the auditing of their financial records if they want to raise money by selling stocks or bonds to the American public. All U.S. companies and most foreign firms already work with the PCAOB in this way, but Chinese firms do not. Some analysts predicted the bill could be swiftly approved as Congress looks to signal toughness toward China in an election year. ---Market Watch

。U.S. home sales logged their biggest drop in nearly 10 years in April as the novel coronavirus pandemic upended the labor market and broader economy, undercutting demand for housing.  The National Association of Realtors said on Thursday existing home sales plunged 17.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.33 million units last month. The percentage decline was the largest since July 2010. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast existing home would decrease 18.9% to a rate of 4.30 million units in April. ---Reuters
