Increasing tension in US-Iran relation, uncertainty in US-China trade talk and weak oversea markets are putting pressure on US stock market today. Weak FAANG stocks are not helping either. Major market indexes are down for the second day after S&P 500 made new high last Friday. Nasdaq Composite is the weakest among indexes today by down more than 0.60%. With FB-1.48%, GOOG -1.03% and AMZN -1.04% due to concern over antitrust probe and 22 out of 30 Dow stocks are down, it doesn't look like the market can recover today. More downside for the market is likely today.

。Trump administration ordered new sanctions against the assets of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several Iranian military commanders, as well as plans to target Foreign Minister Javad Zarif later this week. The penalties effectively freeze the business operations of the Supreme Leader's office, which controls a global network of private companies that some experts estimate is worth between $100B-$200B. Tensions already worsened in May, when Washington ordered all countries to halt imports of Iranian oil, and then escalated following a series of apparent Iranian-backed skirmishes in the Middle East. "Imposing useless sanctions is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi wrote on Twitter. ---Wall Street Breakfast

。Investors waiting anxiously to see if anything comes of Sino-U.S. trade talks later this week, with sentiment not helped after a senior U.S. official said president Donald Trump would be happy with “any outcome” from the trade talks with China, suggesting Trump was not in a concessionary mood. ---Zero Hedge

。On Monday a US judge found three large Chinese banks — reportedly the state-owned Bank of Communications, China Merchants Bank, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank — in contempt for refusing to comply with subpoenas in an investigation into North Korean sanctions violations. This could open the door for them to be cut off from the US financial system, i.e. SWIFT.

。"Should it occur, to say that China will not take that well is as large an understatement as one can conceive of. It would be an earthquake", commented Rabobank's Michael Every. ---Zero Hedge

。Powell takes the stage at 11 a.m. ET, just 24 hours after President Trump accused the central bank of behaving like a "stubborn child" in refusing to lower interest rates. The Fed Chair is likely to reiterate or intensify a recent dovish turn on interest rates - which has traders pricing in a 100% chance of a July reduction in the Fed Funds rate and a 73.3% chance of two more cuts between now and the end of the year - but there's also the possibility he could walk back some of the market's dovish interpretation of last week's FOMC meeting. ---Wall Street Breakfast

。Alphabet(GOOG)A number of rivals are gearing up to help U.S. officials with an antitrust probe of the Google parent, according to The Wall Street Journal. Among them: TripAdvisor and Yelp, which have accused Google of favoring its own content in search results. ---CNBC
