U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he hoped for productive talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on a trade war that is casting a shadow on global growth, but said he had not made any promises about a reprieve from escalating tariffs. “At a minimum it will be productive. We’ll see what happens and what comes out of it,” Trump told reporters after a series of meetings with leaders where he made clear that his priority was two-way trade deals to boost the U.S. economy. Asked, however, if he had promised Xi a six-month reprieve on imposing new tariffs on a $300 billion list of Chinese imports, Trump said: “No.” ---Reuters
The Federal Reserve didn't object to the capital plans of all 18 firms subject to its CCAR stress tests, but is requiring Credit Suisse (CS) to address "certain limited weaknesses in its capital planning processes." Big U.S. banks, like JPMorgan (JPM), Citigroup (C), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Bank of America (BAC), showered investors with fatter dividends and share repurchases following the news. Goldman Sachs (GS) is looking at digital currencies and conducting "extensive research" on tokenization -- turning currencies or assets into tradeable digital currencies or assets contained on a blockchain, Goldman CEO David Solomon told France's Les Echos newspaper. The bank's move follows JPMorgan Chase's (JPM) announcement in February that it's developed JPM Coin, a stable coin its clients can use for cross-border payments. This month Facebook introduced its own coin, called Libra, which it plans to launch next year. Blockchain-based stable coins tied to real currencies, though, are "the direction in which the payment system will go," he said. ---Seeking alpha
Constellation Brands (STZ ) posted stronger-thane-expected first quarter earnings Friday, and boosted its full-year profit outlook, as the Corona beer maker continues to reap the rewards of selling its low-end wine brand portfolio for around $1.7 billion earlier this year. Constellation said comparable earnings for the three months ending in May, the group's fiscal first quarter, came in at $2.21 per share, up modestly from the same period last year but firmly ahead of the Street consensus of $2.07 per share. Group revenues, Constellation said, rose 2% to $2.097 billion and also topped analysts' estimates of a $2.07 billion tally. ---The Street
