。President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would delay an increase in U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods scheduled for later this week thanks to progress in trade talks and said if progress continued, he and Chinese President Xi Jinping would seal a deal. The president said in a tweet that progress had been made on a host of divisive areas including intellectual property protection, technology transfers, agriculture, services and currency. ---Reuters

。U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May once again postponed a final vote on her Brexit divorce agreement, raising the stakes in a battle with members of her own cabinet who are fighting to avert a no-deal exit. The prime minister set a new deadline of March 12 -- just 17 days before Brexit day -- for parliament to vote on the accord she’s still trying to renegotiate. The move risks making those who are seeking to avoid a catastrophic no-deal departure even more determined to defeat her. They’ll have a chance to do that on Wednesday, when they’ll try to force her to delay exit day in order to avoid the economic damage of crashing out. Meanwhile, it emerged on Sunday that European Union officials are also working on a new plan that could help get the deal over the line at the last minute. ---Bloomberg

。Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson recently claimed that the US is also about to enter an earnings recession, ironically after one of the strongest years for corporate profits on record, the picture of American companies is not much better. Not only is an above average number of companies issuing negative EPS guidance for Q1 2019 (of the 93 companies providing official guidance, 68 or 73%, have issued negative EPS guidance), but consensus EPS for Q1 is now deep in the red. According to Factset, the average Wall Street forecast now projects Q1 earnings per share to decline by 2.7% Y/Y, worse than a consensus -0.8% forecast drop three weeks ago, and starkly lower than the +3% EPS growth expected for Q1 at the start of the year.

。Friday’s finish, for one, capped the best start to a year for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,  and the S&P 500 index SPX, since 1987, according to Dow Jones Market Data, measuring the first 36 trading sessions for those indexes at the beginning of a calendar year. Over that period, the Dow has rallied 11.6%, and the S&P 500 has risen 11.4%. Put another way, the Dow has registered eight consecutive weekly gains in 2019, which it hasn’t done since an interrupted rally to start 1964, when it logged 11 weekly advances. Still, anxiety about the health of the U.S. economy and those outside of the U.S. lingers, even if markets appear to have shaken off a late-2018 downturn that culminated in the worst-ever Christmas Eve decline to stage a stunning resurgence. One sign of complacency, the CBOE Volatility Index VIX( -6.57% )known as Wall Street’s “fear index,” has fallen for nine straight weeks to 13.51, representing its longest weekly skid on record. A reading of 19.5 representing its historical average. ---Market Watch

---Market Watch
