Stocks in Asia tumbled anew as anxiety about global recession grips investors. Circuit breakers were set off in multiple markets even as global governments and central banks are seen taking unprecedented measures to stem a public health crisis. Trading halts were triggered from Manila to Jakarta and Seoul. Shares in the Philippines tanked as much as 24% after resuming trading from a two-day shutdown, spurring the exchange to review its trading halt rules. The country’s benchmark index pared losses to close down 13%, a record fall. South Korea’s Kospi fell as much as 9.5%, while Indonesian benchmark plunged 5% before tripping a trading halt for the fourth time in six days.“Margin calls, liquidations, forced sell-off and redemptions are forming a self-reinforcing negative spiral,” said Margaret Yang, a strategist at CMC Markets Singapore Pte. ---Bloomberg

 ECB announced a new Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme that will deploy €750 billion ($819 billion) to purchase securities to help support the European economy. The central bank said purchases will be conducted until the end of 2020 and include a variety of assets including government debt.---CNBC

The Federal Reserve said late Wednesday night that it would offer emergency loans to money market mutual funds, its latest in a series of steps to keep the financial system functioning and prop up the economy as it spirals toward recession during the coronavirus pandemic. Officials said they would establish a so-called Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility, which would be backed by $10 billion from the Treasury Department. That facility joins a similar lending program for banks, established earlier this week.---New York Times

The dollar surged and everything else was blown away on Thursday as emergency central bank measures in Europe, the United States and Australia failed to halt a fresh wave of panic selling. “There’s no buyers, there’s not much liquidity and everyone is just getting out,” said Chris Weston, head of research at Melbourne brokerage Pepperstone. Stocks, bonds, gold and commodities fell as the world struggles to contain coronavirus and investors and businesses scramble for hard cash.---Reuters

Italy, which has been reporting record numbers of newly confirmed cases and deaths, as well as a surprising number of young and healthy people hospitalized in serious condition. Italian PM Giuseppe Conte said Thursday that the government would extend the nation-wide lockdown beyond April 3 because too many Italians are disregarding the orders. The extension comes as Italy faces an alarming milestone: On Thursday, Italy is very likely to officially overtake China as the country with the largest number of deaths from the virus. 475 people lost their lives on Wednesday, the largest daily jump yet, taking the total in Italy to 2978. Officially, China's death toll is 3,231, according to the WHO, though many suspect the real death toll is much, much higher. As of Thursday morning in New York, Italy has recorded 35,713 cases, along with 2,978 deaths.---ZeroHedge

COVID-19 kills one person every 10 minutes in Iran, the health ministry spokesman tweeted, as the death toll in the Middle East’s worst-affected country climbed to 1,284.
“Based on our information, every 10 minutes one person dies from the coronavirus and some 50 people become infected with the virus every hour in Iran,” Kianush Jahanpur tweeted. —Reuters
