Trump on Tuesday plans to meet with Senate and House Republicans to discuss “a possible payroll tax cut” and other “substantial relief” as coronavirus cases in the US topped 750 with 26 deaths. Reducing payroll taxes would put more money into consumers' pockets. However, some economists question whether typical stimulus measures would work during the outbreak if concerned citizens stay home and avoid spending money at restaurants or the movies. The president said Monday night he would also look at ways to help hourly employees who could miss paychecks if they 're unable to go to work. Crude oil futures soared 10% on Tuesday morning after the most significant decline since the 1991 Gulf War on Monday, after Saudi Arabia slashed export prices of oil over the weekend in retaliation to Russia walking away from a production cut agreement at OPEC's meeting in Vienna, Austria, on Friday. Oil futures started the rebound on Monday evening when President Trump said his administration would discuss a possible payroll tax cut with the US Senate, saying they would seek "very very substantial relief" for the economy that has been roiled by the outbreak of Covid-19. --- ZeroHedge
Russia stepped up its price war with Saudi Arabia by warning it can raise oil production, while also saying further cooperation with OPEC is possible. After the collapse of OPEC + talks last week, Russia could increase output by as much as 500,000 barrels a day in the near future, Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Tuesday. His statement came just minutes after Saudi Aramco escalated the battle for market share by pledging record oil shipments in April. --- Bloomberg
In an almost unprecedented peace-time move, Italy's government has basically put the whole country into lockdown as it attempts to gain control over the largest outbreak outside China. The government has promised financial support for industries hit and to ease the credit burden on citizens. Beyond Italy, the spread of the virus continues with cases reported in Europe at the ECB, Deutsche Bank AG, KKR & Co. and BBVA. China reported only 19 new infections, the lowest level since Jan. 18 as the outbreak seems to be under control there. --- Bloomberg
