Mid Day Market Comment 美股中盘评论

After initial strengths driven by earning beats by Goldman Sachs (GS) and Bank Of America (BAC),
major market indexes have been retreating form their morning highs. The morning highs for indexes are: Dow 24248, S&P 500 2624, Nasdaq 7080, Russell 2000 1460. At 10:16 Pacific Time, they are trading at 24205, 2618, 7040 and 1452 respectively. Strong sectors are: Financial XLF and Materials IYM. However, Semiconductor SMH , Biotech IBB and Software IGV sectors have now turned from up to down. VXX is up in the face of S&P500 up 0.3% indicates investors are buying protections for the downside.

At its morning high, S&P 500 is only 4 points away from its 50 day moving average resistance at 2628. By backing away from 2628, investors may take it as a failure in testing the 50 day moving average. After close to 12% surge from December low, the S&P 500 need a rest. The 2628 level is hard to cross over without further good news.  Major tech earnings will not be reported until the week of January 28. So no big driver for the market until then and it's a natural time for the market to correct. On the negative side, Netflix (NFLX) earning tomorrow may usher in profit taking on the stock regardless of its result since it has rallied over 54% from December low. This may be a trigger for a market sell off.
