Today's stock market rally was triggered by news of China's plans of implementing economic stimulus and Netflix (NFLX) increasing subscription fee that have it and the rest of the FAANG stocks running. As the market started to run, short cover and buying in fear of missing out crowd piled in. Here is how it look at the close: Dow 24065.59 +0.65%, S&P 500 2610.30 +1.07%, Nasdaq 7023.83 +1.71%, Russell 2000 1444.79 +0.84%.
After breaking their 1st line of resistances, major market indexes are now ready to challenge their next level of resistances. They are Dow 24250 to 24387area , S&P 500 2620 to 2631 area , Nasdaq 7100 to 7200 area, Russell 2000 1452. They are 0.8% to 1.3%, 0.4% to 0.8%, 1% to 2.5% away respectively for the indexes. Major market indexes are not far from their next level of resistances. These resistances are only one day move away from reaching. Please see charts below.
One weakness common to all index rallies are the decreasing trading volumes. These means buying are lack of commitments and rallies may not be able to sustain. Another negative is Commodity Channel Index (CCI) for each of the indexes are now at the previous overbought peak levels. And they may be ready to turn back down. I listed many other negatives for the US stock market in my previous blog named "market rallies defying a list of bad news" and these negatives may also drag on the market's rally. NFLX help to push market up today, but it may also serve to drag down the market after it reports earning Thursday. NFLX has already gone up 53% since its December 26 low and is overbought . This big move in a short time makes its earning report hard to please and may sell off regardless of earning result.
Major market indexes has bounced up around 11% from their December bottoms, and major resistances are only 1 day away, in addition many market negatives have not been resolved, so beware of a market set back!
