Better than expected earnings from semiconductor stocks such as Texas Instrument (TXN), Lam Research (LRCX) and Xilinx (XLNX) are driving semiconductor sector (SMH) up over 5% and the Technology sector (XLK) up 0.4%. However,  comments from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says the U.S. is still “miles and miles” from a trade deal with China serves as a wet blanket for the market.  Major market indexes are mixed with Nasdaq, Russell 2000 up but Dow and S&P 500 down.
The market will likely trade narrowly today.

Technically, major market indexes have now stay above their 50 Day Moving Averages for the 4th day and this is bullish. The trends of major market indexes are up however the up trends are capped by their 200 Day Moving Average resistances. They are Dow 24974, S&P 500 2741, Nasdaq 7452 and Russell 2000 1591. Since the Dow is the index closest to its 200 day moving average, we should closely watch how it is doing. Dow is now trading between 50 Day Moving Average at 24240 and 200 Day Moving Average 24974. Dropping below 24240 or breaking above 24974 will allow bigger moves one way or the other.

Earning reports from major technology companies and US-China trade talk progress may make or break the stock market trend. Schedule for major technology companies are as follows: 1/24 INTC, 1/29 AAPL, AMD, 1/30 FB, MSFT, 1/31 AMZN, 2/4 GOOGL.  Chinese Vice Premier Liu He is scheduled to meet next week in Washington with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer for trade talk.
